As a schoolboy I had invested my hard earned pocket money in a couple of Border Leicester ewe lambs, on leaving home I sold my small but pretty decent flock to a local breeder. In 1999 we registered our first Bluefaced lambs their dams having been purchased in contemplation of crossing the blackies, which of course we couldn’t bring ourselves to do in the end.
The most significant females were sourced from Ewanston flock at Robin Thomson’s dispersal and from the dispersal of Glen Shapiro’s Hazelwood flock. The significant stock tups used were Ewanston Digger {the tup Robin used to serve his dispersal ewes} Followed by two Carry house being B1 and B10 who left some outstanding females for us,followed by our home bred D10, then came two from Alex Bisset’s Middle Dukesfield flock, the first of which met with a sad end before he could show his worth and the second we have run for two seasons and will cover all non relatives again in 2015. Bought for his great skin exceptional mouth and tremendous outlook he must be one of the sharpest old tups around
This being a new venture we again hit the show circuit, with fairly satisfactory results. A reasonable haul from the RHAS in several showings, together with high end results locally, including several interbreeds with our females, and at Perth winning the interbreed pairs with a homebred mother and shearling son combination. In 2013 we dominated the Scottish Progeny show winning every group we entered and taking the championship with a pair of homebred ewes by the same sire.
We aim to breed correct, sharp sheep, powerful, but sensibly sized, with good but fully coated skins, perhaps best summed up as “Beauty with Functionality and absolutely fit for purpose.”
Since the Texels are recorded we do record the Blues, though I remain unconvinced that current EBV’s satisfactorily reflect the really important aspects and traits vital to a ‘Maternal Sire’ breed.
Tups are sold as shearlings at home and in Stirling with a number of gimmers or mature females usually for home sale either maiden or served.
